Garage Drywall Finishing & Painting

Most garages get left half-finished because nobody thinks they’ll care, until they actually start using the space.

Professional Garage Drywall Finishing in Virginia

A finished garage makes the whole space more usable. Sounds simple, but it’s true. Whether you’re setting up a workshop, a home gym, or just want a cleaner place to park and store things, bare drywall and exposed studs don’t cut it. The walls collect dust, the seams show, and the whole room feels unfinished because it is.

We finish garage drywall the same way we’d finish any room in your home. That means taping all the seams, mudding the joints, sanding everything smooth, and priming before paint goes on. The difference is we understand garages take more abuse than living rooms. Bikes get leaned against walls, car doors swing open, storage racks get mounted. We account for that.

A lot of homeowners put this project off, thinking it’s complicated or expensive. It’s neither. Once the drywall is up, finishing and painting usually takes us a few days depending on the size of your garage. And the result is a space that actually feels like part of your home instead of a concrete box with some panels slapped up.

See Garages We've Finished

We’ve worked on single-car garages in older homes, three-car garages in new builds, and everything in between. Some homeowners want basic white walls. Others want accent walls, built-in storage areas with finished surrounds, or specialty finishes that make the garage feel more like a studio. Our gallery shows a range of completed projects so you can get a sense of what’s possible and how clean the finished product looks.

What Goes Into Finishing Garage Drywall

If your garage already has drywall hung but nothing beyond that, you’re looking at a finishing job. If the walls are still open studs, we need to hang the drywall first, then finish it. Either way, here’s what the finishing process involves.

Drywall Finishing vs. Just Painting Bare Drywall

You’d be surprised how many people think they can skip the finishing steps and just throw paint on the bare drywall. You can, technically, but it looks terrible.

The seams show through, the texture is inconsistent, and the paint soaks in unevenly because drywall paper and joint compound absorb differently. Within a few months, you’ll see every seam, every screw hole, every imperfection.

Finishing the drywall properly means those seams and screw holes get filled, sanded smooth, and primed so the final paint coat looks uniform. That’s the difference between a garage that looks like someone cared and one that looks like a rental unit nobody bothered to finish.

Common Garage Drywall Projects We Handle

Paint Options for Garage Walls

Most garages get painted white or light gray because it reflects light and makes the space feel bigger. But you’re not locked into neutral tones if you don’t want them. Some homeowners go with darker colors on one wall to create a workspace backdrop or use a bright color to make the garage feel more energized.

Staying on Track and On Budget

Finishing and painting a two-car garage usually runs a few thousand dollars, depending on the condition of the drywall and how much prep work is needed. That includes taping, mudding, sanding, priming, and two coats of paint. If we’re hanging drywall from scratch, the cost goes up because of the material and labor. We’ll give you a clear number after we see the space.
Most garage finishing projects take three to five days. Mudding and sanding take the most time because the compound needs to dry between coats. Painting goes quicker. We’ll give you a schedule up front and stick to it unless we run into something unexpected, like water damage or structural issues that need fixing first.

Frequently Asked Questions About Garage Drywall Finishing

Not necessarily. We need clear access to the walls and ceiling, but we can work around large items like workbenches or storage cabinets if they’re not in the way. If your garage is packed floor to ceiling, yeah, you’ll need to clear some space so we can move around and set up equipment. We’ll let you know what needs moving when we come out for the estimate.

If part of your garage is already finished and you want the new sections to match, we can do that. We bring texture samples and test them on a small area before we commit. Orange peel and knockdown are the most common textures, and we can usually match them pretty closely. Popcorn ceilings are trickier, but we can handle those too if needed.

We seal off the door between the garage and your home with plastic sheeting and tape. Sanding creates the most dust, and we use sanders with built-in vacuums to catch most of it at the source. There’s still some dust that gets airborne, but it stays in the garage. We also sweep and vacuum at the end of each day so you’re not walking through a mess.
If we’re hanging new drywall, we inspect the framing and insulation before we close up the walls. If something looks off, we’ll point it out before we cover it. If you’re having us finish existing drywall and you’re worried about what’s behind it, we can cut a small inspection hole in a hidden area to check. Better to know now than after everything is finished and painted.
