Drywall Repair & Patching Services

A patched wall shouldn’t look patched, and we’re kind of picky about making sure it doesn’t.

Drywall Fixes That Actually Disappear

Holes in drywall are one of those things that seem like they should be simple to fix, but then you try it yourself and realize there’s more to it than slapping some spackle in there and calling it a day. The patch shows through the paint, or the texture doesn’t match, or the edges are visible from certain angles. It’s frustrating.

We handle drywall repair throughout Fairfax, Chantilly, Centreville, Oakton, Vienna, and surrounding Virginia areas for homeowners who want the wall to look like nothing ever happened. Sometimes that’s a small nail hole from a picture frame. Sometimes it’s a doorknob that went through the wall during an argument or a kid’s bedroom where things got a little too rowdy. We’ve seen it all, and we’ve fixed it all.

The thing about drywall is that it’s everywhere in your home, so when it’s damaged, you notice it constantly. A hole in the hallway catches your eye every time you walk by. Water damage on the ceiling makes you wonder if it’s getting worse. Cracks around door frames just look sloppy. Getting these fixed properly means you stop thinking about them.

When Drywall Needs Fixing

Some damage is obvious. Other times you’re not sure if it’s worth calling someone or if you should just ignore it. Here’s what we typically fix and why it matters.

What We Can Repair vs. What Needs Replacing

Not every drywall issue requires cutting out entire sections and starting over. A lot of damage can be repaired without major demo work.

Small holes under 6 inches usually get patched with mesh tape and joint compound or a California patch if they need more support. Medium holes between 6 and 12 inches need a backer board for stability before we compound and finish them. Large holes or extensive damage means cutting out a section and installing a new piece of drywall, which we tape, mud, sand, and finish to match the surrounding wall.

Water damage is different. If the drywall is just stained but still solid, we can sometimes seal and paint over it. If it’s soft, crumbling, or has mold, that section needs to be cut out and replaced. We won’t patch over a problem that’s going to come back.

Cracks depend on what caused them. Hairline cracks from settling get filled and smoothed. Larger cracks that keep reopening might need mesh tape or a more robust repair. If the crack is structural, we’ll tell you that too.

How We Match Your Existing Walls

This is where a lot of DIY repairs and even some contractors fall short. The patch might be solid, but it looks like a patch. We take matching seriously.

See Our Work

We’ve patched walls in older homes where the plaster was crumbling, fixed water damage in bathrooms and kitchens, and repaired holes in new construction where contractors were a little careless. Keeping Things Simple and On Schedule

Drywall work can feel invasive because it’s messy and you’re often dealing with dust and debris in your living space. We minimize the disruption and stick to a clear plan so you know what to expect.
Drywall repair pricing depends on how much damage there is and how complicated the fix will be. A few nail holes and a small patch might be a quick job. Extensive water damage that requires cutting out large sections of drywall and replacing insulation takes more time and materials. After we see what needs fixing, we’ll give you a clear number. We also let you know if there are any related issues, like if we find mold behind damaged drywall that needs to be addressed before we close things up.
Most repairs take a day or two, though we might need to come back for a second coat of compound or to do the final paint match after everything dries. Larger jobs where we’re replacing multiple sheets of drywall can take a few days. We work clean, contain the dust as much as possible with plastic sheeting, and vacuum thoroughly before we leave. Drywall dust gets everywhere if you’re not careful, and we’d rather spend an extra ten minutes cleaning than leave your house looking like a construction site.

Common Drywall Mistakes We Fix

A lot of our work involves redoing repairs that someone else attempted. Here’s what usually goes wrong.

FAQs About Drywall Repair & Patching Services

It depends on humidity and how thick the application is, but generally 24 hours for joint compound to dry enough for another coat, and at least 24 to 48 hours before priming and painting. We don’t rush this part because wet compound under paint will crack or show through. If we’re doing multiple coats on a larger repair, the whole process might take a few days with drying time factored in.
Most of the time, yes. We blend the paint on the repaired area to match the surrounding wall. Sometimes the match is perfect and you’d never know. Other times, especially if the existing paint has faded or there’s a sheen difference, the repair might be slightly visible depending on lighting. If you want a guaranteed invisible repair, repainting the entire wall is the safest bet, but we can usually get pretty close without going that far.
We stop and address the mold before continuing the repair. Small mold patches can be cleaned and treated, but if it’s extensive, you might need a mold remediation specialist before we proceed. We also figure out what caused the moisture problem in the first place, whether it’s a leak or condensation issue, because patching over mold without fixing the source just means it’ll come back. We’d rather be honest about what needs to happen than cover up a problem.
Unless the damage is extensive or there are multiple problem areas, repairing is usually the better option. It costs less, takes less time, and creates less mess. We only recommend replacing entire sections when the damage is severe, when there’s underlying structural or moisture issues, or when the existing drywall is old and brittle enough that repairs won’t hold up long term.
