Drywall Repair & Patching Services

Drywall Fixes That Actually Disappear
Holes in drywall are one of those things that seem like they should be simple to fix, but then you try it yourself and realize there’s more to it than slapping some spackle in there and calling it a day. The patch shows through the paint, or the texture doesn’t match, or the edges are visible from certain angles. It’s frustrating.
We handle drywall repair throughout Fairfax, Chantilly, Centreville, Oakton, Vienna, and surrounding Virginia areas for homeowners who want the wall to look like nothing ever happened. Sometimes that’s a small nail hole from a picture frame. Sometimes it’s a doorknob that went through the wall during an argument or a kid’s bedroom where things got a little too rowdy. We’ve seen it all, and we’ve fixed it all.
The thing about drywall is that it’s everywhere in your home, so when it’s damaged, you notice it constantly. A hole in the hallway catches your eye every time you walk by. Water damage on the ceiling makes you wonder if it’s getting worse. Cracks around door frames just look sloppy. Getting these fixed properly means you stop thinking about them.

When Drywall Needs Fixing
Some damage is obvious. Other times you’re not sure if it’s worth calling someone or if you should just ignore it. Here’s what we typically fix and why it matters.
- Small to medium holes: Whether it's from moving furniture, removing old fixtures, or accidents, holes in drywall are common. We patch them properly with backing material when needed, compound everything smooth, and match your wall texture so you can't tell where the repair was.
- Cracks in walls or ceilings: These can be cosmetic or they can indicate settling. We evaluate what's causing the crack, fix the underlying issue if there is one, and repair the surface. Corner cracks, ceiling cracks, and cracks around door frames are all fixable.
- Water damage: Roof leaks, plumbing issues, or even high humidity can damage drywall. The material gets soft, stains appear, and sometimes mold starts growing. We cut out the damaged section, make sure the moisture source is resolved, and replace the drywall with proper mold-resistant materials if needed.
- Dents and dings: Years of living in a house means walls get bumped. Furniture, doors, kids, dogs. These surface imperfections are easy fixes but they add up and make a room look worn.
- Popped nails or screws: When fasteners start poking through the surface, it means the drywall has shifted, or the framing lumber has dried out. We reset them properly and refinish the surface.
- Textured wall repairs: If your walls have knockdown, orange peel, or popcorn texture, matching it during a repair takes some skill. We keep texture samples and tools on hand to blend repairs seamlessly.
What We Can Repair vs. What Needs Replacing
Not every drywall issue requires cutting out entire sections and starting over. A lot of damage can be repaired without major demo work.
Small holes under 6 inches usually get patched with mesh tape and joint compound or a California patch if they need more support. Medium holes between 6 and 12 inches need a backer board for stability before we compound and finish them. Large holes or extensive damage means cutting out a section and installing a new piece of drywall, which we tape, mud, sand, and finish to match the surrounding wall.
Water damage is different. If the drywall is just stained but still solid, we can sometimes seal and paint over it. If it’s soft, crumbling, or has mold, that section needs to be cut out and replaced. We won’t patch over a problem that’s going to come back.
Cracks depend on what caused them. Hairline cracks from settling get filled and smoothed. Larger cracks that keep reopening might need mesh tape or a more robust repair. If the crack is structural, we’ll tell you that too.
How We Match Your Existing Walls
- Texture matching: We carry different texture guns and applicators to replicate knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel, and other common finishes. We practice the pattern on scrap material first, then apply it to the repair so it blends with the rest of the wall.
- Surface prep: Before any texture or paint goes on, the repair needs to be dead smooth if the surrounding area is smooth, or properly textured if the wall has texture. We sand carefully, sometimes multiple times, and prime the patched area so paint adheres evenly.
- Paint blending: Even if you give us the exact paint color, a fresh patch can look slightly different due to how light hits it or because the surrounding paint has aged. We feather the paint out beyond the repair area when possible and sometimes recommend repainting the entire wall for a perfect match, though that's not always necessary.

Common Drywall Mistakes We Fix
- Using too much compound creates a lumpy surface that's hard to sand smooth. Using too little leaves the patch slightly recessed, which shadows under light. We apply thin coats, let them dry properly, and build up the surface gradually.
- Skipping primer means the paint absorbs differently on the patched area, making it visible even if the texture matches. We always prime.
- Not feathering the edges makes the repair obvious because there's a hard line where the compound stops. We feather everything out gradually so it blends.
- Rushing the drying time between coats leads to cracking and shrinkage. Compound needs time to cure, especially in humid Virginia weather. We don't cut corners on drying time.
- Ignoring the texture is probably the most common mistake. If your walls have texture and the patch is smooth, it'll stand out forever. We match the texture every time.
