Interior Trim & Molding Repair/Replacement

Fresh trim makes a room feel finished again, like someone actually cared enough to get it right.

Quality Interior Trim & Molding Services You Can Count On

Look around your home for a second. Chances are, there’s baseboards pulling away from the wall somewhere, or crown molding with gaps you could slide a credit card through. Maybe the door casings are dinged up from years of moving furniture, or the chair rail in the dining room has seen better days. These things happen. Homes settle, wood shifts, people live.

We work with homeowners throughout Fairfax, Chantilly, Centreville, Oakton, Vienna, and other parts of Virginia who want their trim to look like it did when the house was new, or better yet, like it should have looked in the first place. There’s a difference between slapping up some baseboards and actually fitting them properly, caulking the seams so they disappear, and getting the miters tight enough that you can’t tell where one piece ends and another begins.

The trim in your home does more work than you think. It covers gaps, protects wall corners from getting banged up, frames doorways and windows, and if we’re being honest, it’s one of the first things people notice when they walk into a room. When it looks rough, the whole space feels a little off. When it’s done right, everything just clicks.

Common Trim & Molding Problems We Fix

Most trim issues fall into a few categories. Sometimes it’s damage from everyday life, like baseboards that got kicked in or door frames that took a hit when someone was hauling in a couch. Other times, it’s age. Wood dries out, paint cracks, and joints open up. And occasionally, you’re dealing with trim that was never installed correctly to begin with.

Types of Trim & Molding We Install

Type Common Uses Notes
Baseboards Floor perimeter protects the wall base Available in various heights and profiles
Crown Molding Ceiling and wall transition Adds elegance, hides ceiling imperfections
Door & Window Casings Frames openings Can match existing or upgrade style
Chair Rails Mid-wall protection and design Popular in dining rooms and hallways
Wainscoting Lower wall panels Protects walls, adds character
Picture Rails & Shelf Molding Decorative and functional display Less common, but adds vintage charm

Staying on Track and on Budget

We know that home improvement projects can feel unpredictable, and the last thing you want is to start something that drags on for weeks or blows past what you thought you’d spend. We take your time and your budget seriously because we’d want the same if someone were working in our home.

Trim work can range quite a bit depending on what you’re replacing and what materials you choose. A simple baseboard replacement in a couple of rooms will cost less than installing crown molding throughout your main floor. We give you a clear estimate upfront after we’ve actually seen the space, measured everything, and talked through what you want. No surprises halfway through. We also help you understand where you can save money and where it makes sense to invest a little more for something that’ll last.
Most trim projects take a few days, not weeks. We show up when we say we will, work efficiently, and clean up before we leave each day. Your home is still your home, and we respect that. We’ve been doing this long enough to know how long things actually take, so when we give you a timeline, we stick to it. Barring some unexpected issue behind the walls, which we’ll talk through with you if it happens, your project wraps up on schedule.

Materials We Work With

Not all trim is created equal. We’ve installed enough of it to know what holds up and what doesn’t.

MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) is affordable and takes paint really well. It’s a solid choice for painted baseboards and casings, especially if you’re working within a tighter budget. The downside is that it doesn’t handle moisture great, so we don’t recommend it in bathrooms or anywhere that gets damp regularly.

Solid wood, usually pine or poplar, is the traditional option. It’s more expensive than MDF but you can stain it if you want a natural wood look, and it’s more durable over time. We use it a lot for crown molding and in homes where the existing trim is wood and needs to match.

PVC or composite trim is becoming more popular, especially in moisture-prone areas. It won’t rot, warp, or swell, and it holds up really well. It costs a bit more upfront but can save you headaches down the line.

We’ll talk through the pros and cons of each based on your specific project and what makes sense for your home and budget.

FAQs About Interior Trim & Molding Repair/Replacement

Usually, yes. We bring samples of your current trim to the shop or the lumberyard and match the profile as closely as possible. Sometimes older homes have custom or discontinued profiles, and in those cases, we can often have pieces milled to match or suggest a complementary style that blends in. The goal is for the new trim to look like it’s always been there.
Honestly, most walls and ceilings aren’t perfectly straight, especially in older homes. We scribe the trim to fit the actual contours of your walls, use caulk strategically to fill small gaps, and make sure everything sits flush. It takes a little extra time and patience, but that’s what separates trim that looks good from trim that looks great.
Not necessarily. We can usually work around furniture by moving it to the center of the room and covering it with drop cloths. If we’re doing baseboards, we’ll need access to the walls, so we might ask you to clear some space. For crown molding, furniture placement doesn’t matter as much. We’ll walk you through what needs to happen before we start.
If we’re installing raw wood, you can paint or stain it right away, though we usually handle the finishing ourselves if you want. If we’ve already primed or painted it, you’re good to go. For caulked seams, we recommend waiting 24 hours before painting over them so the caulk has time to set properly.
