Drywall Repair & Patching

The phrase “we’ll deal with it before we paint” is how most drywall problems end up sitting on a homeowner’s list for years.

Drywall Repairs That Disappear Into the Wall

Patching drywall is straightforward on paper. Cut out the damage, install a clean piece, tape the joints, apply compound, sand, prime, and paint. In practice, the difference between a patch that vanishes and one you can pick out from across the room comes down to feathering the compound properly, matching the wall’s existing texture, and not rushing the drying time between coats. We give all three of those steps the time they need on every repair we take on.

Most drywall problems we see across Northern Virginia are some combination of impact damage, settling cracks, water-affected sections that need replacing, popped nails or screws that have worked their way through the paint, and small holes from anchors, mounts, or shelving that has been moved over the years. Each of these has its own correct approach. A small nail hole is not the same job as a six-inch patch over impact damage, and they should not be treated as if they were.

We work as part of larger projects and as standalone repairs. Sometimes a homeowner is preparing for a repaint and wants every wall properly sound before any color goes on. Other times, the call is about one specific spot that has been bothering them for a while. Either way, the repair gets the same level of care, and the finished wall looks like the damage was never there.

Common Drywall Issues We Handle

Most damage falls into one of a handful of categories. Here is what we see most often across Northern Virginia homes:

What Causes Drywall Damage in the First Place

Cause Where You Typically See It What the Repair Usually Involves
Impact Damage Behind doors, hallways, high-traffic walls Patch the damaged section, tape, compound, texture match, prime, paint
House Settling Corners of doorways, window frames, ceiling joins Reinforce the crack, apply compound in layers, sand, prime, repaint
Moisture and Past Leaks Ceilings, bathrooms, walls below upstairs plumbing Confirm leak is resolved, remove affected drywall, replace, finish, repaint
Popped Fasteners Anywhere on walls or ceilings, often in clusters Reset or replace the fastener, fill, sand smooth, prime, repaint
Anchor and Mounting Holes Living rooms, bedrooms, anywhere wall hangings have moved Patch, compound, sand, prime, paint to match surrounding wall
Corner Bead Damage Outside corners of walls and archways Reattach or replace bead, compound in layers, sand, prime, repaint

Why Texture Matching Matters More Than People Think

A drywall patch can be technically sound and still look obvious if the texture does not match the rest of the wall. Smooth walls show every difference under angled light. Knockdown, orange peel, and other textured finishes are even less forgiving, because the eye picks up on variation in the texture pattern instantly.

We treat texture matching as part of the repair, not an afterthought. The pattern, density, and depth are all built up to sit naturally against the surrounding wall before primer and paint go on top. The work takes longer than spraying generic texture and hoping it blends, and the result holds up to honest inspection. A repaired section should not be findable after the paint dries. That is the standard we work to on every job.

Straight Answers Before Any Work Begins

Drywall repair is one of the more common things homeowners put off, often because previous quotes have felt unclear or the work itself feels too small to bother coordinating. We try to make both ends of that easier. You can read more about our broader interior painting services here if you would like a fuller sense of how we work generally.

The estimate we provide after seeing the damage in person is the figure we stand behind. No padding at the start, no quiet additions later. If a repair turns out to be more involved than it first appeared, you hear about it before anything changes. Most clients we work with mention afterward that the clarity from the first conversation was what made them comfortable moving forward.
Small repairs can often be completed in a single visit. Larger projects, particularly those involving replacement panels or significant texture work, are planned across a couple of days to allow proper drying between compound coats. The completion date we agree on at the start is the one we hold to, and the space stays clean and usable throughout.

Questions We Get Asked About Drywall Repair

A drywall repair done with proper feathering, texture matching, and finish should not be findable once the paint has dried. The work takes longer than rushed patching, and that time is where the result comes from. We take it on every repair we handle, whether it is a small nail hole or a full panel replacement.
Both. We handle the drywall work and the painting as a single connected project, which is generally the cleanest way to get an invisible repair. If you have already arranged painting separately, we will finish the drywall to primer-ready condition so the painter can take it from there. Either approach works, and we will walk through both during the estimate.
Repeated cracks in the same spot usually mean the underlying issue has not been addressed. The wall is moving, often from settling or a structural element nearby, and surface repair alone will not hold. We assess the cause during the visit and apply a reinforcement method appropriate to the situation, which is generally what stops the cycle. If the cause appears structural, we tell you honestly and recommend the right specialist before any repair work begins.

The drywall needs to be fully dry before any replacement or repair work begins, and the source of the moisture needs to be confirmed resolved. Depending on how saturated the area was, drying time can range from a few days to a couple of weeks.

We check moisture levels during the visit and give you a realistic sense of when the work can start. Skipping that drying period is the most reliable way to end up redoing the repair within months.
